The Rose That Grew From Concrete Tupac Shakur was a black African American rapper who lived his life with poverty, violence and drugs. Tupac Shakur was born in New York City. His parents had separated before he was born, and his mother moved him and his sister around the country for much of their childhood. Frequently, the family was at the poverty level, but Shakur managed to gain acceptance to the prestigious Baltimore School of the Arts as a teenager. While he was at the school, his creative side flourished, as he began writing raps and acting. All his poetry relies on vivid imagery and violent language to create a very realistic picture of how terrible life can be living in the ghettos of America. Tupac Shakur was a poet, an actor, and the voice of a generation. He was able to make movies and videos, write and record music, and still found time to write remarkable poetry before his untimely death. In one of his poems, â€Å"The Rose That Grew from Concrete, Tupacâ €™s theme statement is â€Å"people surrounded by trouble and failure can still live and succeed†. This is almost an exact reflection of struggle for success. People who come from broken homes, troubled youth, failed pasts or other tough backgrounds still can succeed and make something beautiful of their life. â€Å"The Rose That Grew from Concrete† is not really about a rose that grew from the concrete. The rose is a simile which symbolizes a man and the concrete symbolizes the ghetto. Tupac is that rose who borned in an urban area. A rose would never grow from concrete and by this he means to say that it is really hard to survive the hard life of the ghetto and make something out of yourself. The second line â€Å"proving nature’s laws wrong it learned 2 walk without having feet† means that the person has made something out of himself. This line conveys a personal struggle between him and success. Nature’s law† is a metaphor for peop le, which mean that no one expected the man to survive and can make something out of himself. From â€Å"The Rose That Grew from Concrete† the rose defied the odds and proven itself to the world all by itself. In the third line, â€Å"Funny it seems but by keeping its dreams it learned 2 breathe fresh air† means that though it seems funny, but if someone tries their best to work towards their dream, they are bound to succeed. Here â€Å"fresh air† is a metaphor for â€Å"success†. In the last sentence Long lives the rose that grew from concrete when no one else even cared† means that though the people around him didn’t care about him, still he overcame his difficulties and managed to succeed. This poem and all of the other Tupac‘s poems are filled with Latinate diction. His informal use of simple words like 2 instead of to, create the idea of three things: it was his actual thoughts, writing poems came naturally for him, and it was his final copy the first time he wrote it. Tupac is a legend and perfected the ways to put his ideas down in ink through forms of poetry and lyrics. This poem â€Å"The Rose That Grew from Concrete† conveys a sense of balance through his use of parallelism, has a sense of flow by his use rhyme, and allows many different audiences to connect with his ideas by his use of informal word choice. These three writing devices let the audience in on Tupac’s personal life and let them see through the eyes of a poetic god. The message Tupac is trying to bring through this poem is to keep trying and focus on your dreams, don’t let anything get in the way. Don’t waste time! Double Genitive Definition and Examples in English grammar

In English grammar, the double genitive is a phrase in which possession is indicated by the preposition of followed by the possessive form of a noun or pronoun, as in a friend of Erics. Also called a  double possessive, an oblique genitive, and a postgenitive.  Some linguists argue that the double genitive is not a true genitive but rather a type of partitive construction. In The Careful Writer (1965), Theodore Bernstein noted that Grammarians have argued over the origin and nature, but not the validity, of the double genitive with the fervor of hot-stove league fans rehashing a Word Series play. Examples and Observations The Dude: Who are you, man?Knox Harrington: Oh, just a friend of Maudies.(The Big Lebowski, 1998)We heard the news from a neighbor of Alices. My bedroom, like that of my potential roommates, is cell-like in both its size and simplicity, furnished with only a bed and a small chest of drawers that easily accommodates the little I brought with me.(David Sedaris, Naked, 1997) Bernsteins Defense of the Double Genitive Not infrequently someone questions a construction that reads like this: He is a political associate of the Presidents. Since the of indicates the possessive (genitive), the someone argues, why tack on another possessive in the form of s? Grammarians differ as to the origin and explanation of the construction, but they do not question its well-established legitimacy. . .  [T]he double genitive is of long standing, idiomatic, useful and here to stay.(Theodore Bernstein, Miss Thistlebottoms Hobgoblins. Farrar, 1971) An Idiomatic Construction Despite their apparent redundancy, double genitive constructions such as a friend of ours or no fault of Jos are established English idiom. Grammarians since C18 have puzzled over the way the construction iterates the of genitive with a genitive inflection on the following pronoun or personal noun.(Pam Peters, The Cambridge Guide to English Usage. Cambridge University Press, 2004) A Subtle Difference To say youre a friend of Gregs means that Greg looks upon you as a friend. To say youre a friend of Greg means that you look upon Greg as a friend. A subtle difference. It seems that the addition of -s to . . . Greg is a way of focusing attention on [this person] as having a more active role in the relationship being expressed. Double possession has given us a way to express quite fine distinctions that we couldnt convey before. The extra marking is not overkill in this case.(Kate Burridge, Weeds in the Garden of Words: Further Observations on the Tangled History of the English Language. Cambridge University Press, 2005) Purists and Language Liberals A good many of us do use some double genitives and do not notice that they are double. Some language liberals argue that in informal and casual contexts the double genitive is idiomatic and not overkill, but few editors of Standard English will be likely to let it stand in formal writing. Its either friends of my sister or my sisters friends; even in conversation, friends of my sisters may grate harshly on some purists ears.(Kenneth Wilson, The Columbia Guide to Standard American English, 1993)The double possessive is a matter of some controversy. Some insist that constructions like a friend of Bills are redundant and therefore should be avoided. Others see an old pal of mine and extrapolate that, because youd never say an old pal of me, you also must reject a friend of Bill.I say trust your ear over either dogma. A friend of Bills probably is better . . ..(Bill Walsh, Yes, I Could Care Less: How to Be a Language Snob Without Being a Jerk. St. Martins Press, 2013)

“What is ‘Superblood” Analysis Free Essays

The article â€Å"What is ‘Superblood’ and Why Do I Want It?†, written by Kyree Leary, explains a great potential medical advancement. A biotech startup company, Rubius Therapeutics, wants to use red blood cells to replace missing enzymes in patients with rare diseases or conditions along with patients with autoimmune disorders in order to treat them. These diseases include Type 1 diabetes and even cancer. We will write a custom essay sample on â€Å"What is ‘Superblood† Analysis or any similar topic only for you Order Now The technique Rubius Therapeutics plans on using is equipping red blood cells with a protein that can be tailored to treat the condition of the patient it is being infused into. Then, the company plans on putting these blood cells into the body, but overall, it will account for less than 1 percent of the patient’s total blood volume. This idea is similar to the idea of using modified T-cells to fight cancer; however, red blood cell therapies do not need to be personalized. For T-cell therapy, the cells must be taken from the patient and put back into the same patient to avoid rejection by the immune system, whereas for the red blood cell treatment, only the use of any person’s O negative blood can be effective, for it is a universal donor. In fact, one donor could generate enough therapeutic doses to treat hundreds of thousands of different patients. The company has not released any products yet, but they have raised $220 million in funding which is going to go towards the development of products along with clinical trials necessary for ensuring their safety. This article certainly grabbed my attention when I saw it while scrolling through articles. I have done a lot of work with blood and enzymes in PBS and Biology, so I was intrigued to see what this new â€Å"Superblood† was. Having learned about blood and the topic of the article already, I understood the methods the company plans on using, which made the article and story even more interesting. I found it fascinating that something as simple as placing missing enzymes back into someone’s body can possibly have the ability to treat a condition as serious as cancer. In addition, it astonishes me how individuals and companies can think of innovative things like this that could have such an impact on people and the field of medicine. The health of millions is compromised by cancer and autoimmune disease, which this procedure targets. If Rubius Therapeutics can successfully use this red blood cell therapy as a treatment for cancer or even Type 1 diabetes, our world will be a better place, and the healthcare field would be drastically altered. This could diminish the need for insulin injections or pumps if done properly along with other standard treatments. Although this idea may not be able to actually cure cancer, it definitely could and probably will lead to other scientists and/or physicians getting inspired and developing innovations that could bring humanity closer to a cure for the deadly disease. Overall, this â€Å"Superblood† can certainly lead to advancements in the medical field which would make our population a healthier group of people. Business Economics Online Business Growth

Question: Discuss about the Business Economics for Online Business Growth. Answer: Purpose The prime purpose of the research lies in the fact to understand the advanced education in the United States of America due to the recent growth of online universities and colleges across the country. The retention rate in percentage and the graduation rate in percentage would be studied for the data of the collected samples and it would give an idea about the pattern of higher education on these online colleges of the United States of America (Weiss and Weiss 2012). Background Higher education being one of the biggest challenges is being faced across the states of United States of America due to recent increase in the growth of the online universities. The independent organisation of Online Education Database aims to frame a complete list of recognized online colleges (Bickel and Lehmann 2012). They have collected data across 29 online universities of the United States of America for the variables the retention rate (%) and the graduation rate (%). The study if these two variables would give an idea about the higher education of the United States of America on their online colleges across the country. Method Data was collected for these purposes for the variables graduation rate and retention rate in these online universities. These collected data would undergo various statistical methods to study the scenario of the higher education in these online colleges. The statistical methods include descriptive analysis that consist of mean, standard deviation, minimum and maximum, scatter plot if the variable retention rate, regression analysis with graduation rate (%) as dependent variable and retention rate (%) as independent variable (Cohen et al. 2013). Results The result of the descriptive statistics for the variables retention rate and graduation rate is as follows: RR(%) Mean 57.41379 Median 60 Mode 51 Standard Error 4.315603 Standard Deviation 23.24023 Sample Variance 540.1084 Kurtosis 0.461757 Skewness -0.30992 Minimum 4 Maximum 100 Range 96 Sum 1665 Count 29 Largest(1) 100 Smallest(1) 4 Table 1: descriptive statistics of retention rate (Source: created by author) GR(%) Mean 41.75862 Median 39 Mode 36 Standard Deviation 9.865724 Sample Variance 97.33251 Standard Error 1.832019 Kurtosis -0.8824 Skewness 0.176364 Minimum 25 Maximum 61 Range 36 Sum 1211 Count 29 Largest(1) 61 Smallest(1) 25 Table 2: descriptive statistics of graduation rate (Source: created by author) The scatter plot with retention rate as independent variable is given below: Figure 1: Scatter plot with retention rate as independent variable (Source: created by author) The equation of regression to calculate the graduation rate (%) given the retention rate (%) is given by graduation rate = 25.4229 + 0.284526 * retention rate. The value of r square of this regression analysis is given by 0.449. Discussion The descriptive statistics of the variables RR (%) and GR (%) shows that the mean value of the variable RR (%) is 57.41379 while the mean value of the variable GR (%) is 41.75862. It is interpreted that the average rate of retention of the online universities in the United States of America is more than the average value of Graduation Rate (Bickel and Lehmann 2012). The retention rate is more than 50% and it can be stated the higher education in online universities is good for the students as they tend to study in these online colleges after completing their first year of education in the college. The graduation rate of the students of these colleges is not high. It can be interpreted that the students might not study properly in these online colleges or the education provided by these online colleges are not up to the mark to help the students complete their graduation. The standard deviation of the variable RR (%) is 23.24 while the standard deviation of the variable GR (%) is 9.86. It can be interpreted that the retention rates vary highly across the online colleges while the variation of the graduation rates across the online colleges of the United States of America is low. The value lowest value of RR (%) is 4 while the lowest value of GR (%) is 25 (Weiss and Weiss 2012). The highest value of RR (%) is 100 while the greatest value of GR (%) is 61. It shows that the range of retention across the online colleges is higher than the range of graduation. The scatter diagram indicates that the retention rate shows an upward trend in their values across the universities. The retention rate had also shows peak and trough in its motion which can be interpreted that the retention rate had increased for some colleges while it decreased for others (Kock 2013). The equation of regression which can be used to predict the graduation rate (%) when retention rate (%) is known is given by graduation rate = 4229 + 0.284526 * retention rate. The expected equation of regression is given by graduation rate = 4229 + 0.284526 * retention rate. The slope of the regression equation is 25.4229 while the value of the coefficient of retention rate is 0.2845 (Lauda?ski 2013). It can be interpreted that on absence of retention rate, the graduation rate would be 25.429 percent which is far less than the average graduation rate of the online colleges (Samuels et al. 2012). Thus, higher value of retention rate is important in order to have a higher value of graduation rate from these online colleges. The value of multiple r for the regression between retention rate and graduation rate is found to be 0.670245 (Oja 2012). This shows a strong correlation between the two variables graduation rate and retention rate. Thus, there is a strong statistically significant association between graduation rate and retention rate. The measure of r square was found to be 0.449228. It can be interpreted that the equation of regression did not provide a good fit for the data as the value of r square shows that the data are not closely fitted to the regression line (Harmatz and Greenblatt 2015). This is because the amount of r square is low. The percentage of retention rate of South University is 51% while its graduation rate is 25%. The value of retention rate of this college is higher than the average value of the rate of retention by the online universities across the United States of America (Cohen et al. 2013). The value of graduation rate of this college is lower than the graduation rate of the online universities across the United States of America. Thus, the students of this college tend to continue their studies after first year. However, the results of the students are not well in this college. The value of retention rate for University of Phoenix is 4 while the value of graduation rate is 28 (Lauda?ski 2013). Both the retention rate and graduation rate for this college is lower than the average values for the online colleges across the country. Thus, it can be interpreted that the education standard of this college is below the average standard of the education for online colleges across the country. Recommendation It is recommended that the online colleges should reframe their policies and strategies to build a better education system across the online colleges across the United States of America. They should also regularly check the colleges of their universities and help them to frame strategies so that they can increase their retention rate. It is also recommended that the online universities must reframe their syllabus and adapt better method of teachings their students. They should also amend their examination patterns so that the students can score better marks and increase the value of graduation rate. References Bickel, P.J. and Lehmann, E.L., 2012. Accommodating All Five Types of Web Visitors - The Writers For Hire

ACCOMMODATING ALL FIVE TYPES OF WEB VISITORS There are five different types of online visitors, each with unique reading and learning styles. In order to write effective copy, your website needs to reach each of the different types of readers and give them the information they need in the way they want it. Let’s take a look at each of the types of online personalities, and some best practices to get them hooked, make a sale, and convert them through your online copy. Group 1: Information Gatherers These folks want to know as much as they can before they make a call or place an order. They want to know your pricing, they want to read about your guarantees and warranties, they want to know how your product works, and they want to know your credentials — they want all the information they can get their hands on, really. These are the people that will be reading your copy attentively, so all of the standard copywriting rules apply: Be clear. Be concise. Be specific. Be benefit-oriented. Remember, the golden rule of attracting Information Gatherers is to never make them guess. Group 2: Visual Learners Visual learners hate to read. When they come to your website, they’re looking for a few pictures or charts where they can quickly grab the info they need to make a decision. You can accommodate visual learners by adding graphics — like a flow chart about how your business or service works, or a table comparing your prices to your competitor’s prices. There are also lots of web tools out there that can also accommodate visual learners, including: Test resultsProcess chartsLabeled diagramsInfographics Group 3: Doers Doers don’t want to research your company or read your website. Period. They want to get it done and move on. They want to find your action statement — and they want to find it fast. Doers literally read your headline and then scroll to the bottom of the page to place an order or fill out your contact form. If you want to keep their attention, you’ll need to give this group something to do: Every page of your website needs to have a call to action — whether it’s â€Å"Print this Coupon Now for a 15% discount† or â€Å"Sign Up For Our Newsletter.† And remember: This group doesn’t want to dig around for information. Make sure that your call to action is clear and easy to find. Don’t bury it in a bunch of copy — highlight it, make it bold, make sure it’s in a prominent position on your website. A few other ways you can capture (and keep) doers’ attention: Put contact information on every single pageAllow for multiple methods of contact: phone, email, forms and even chat Group 4: Speed Readers This name is a little deceptive, because â€Å"Speed Readers† don’t actually read your website — they skim it. The opposite of Information Gatherers, Speed Readers figure they can get everything they need by reading the headlines and a few bolded points. To make this group happy, your web copy needs to be broken up and easy to scan. A few other ways to keep skimmers happy? Use bullets, big headlines, and bolding to guide them to the main ideas. Group 5: Listeners These guys would rather see and hear it than read it. They love videos and voice-overs. This is the group that will want to check out your company’s YouTube channel right away; they’re huge fans of things like product demos, unboxing videos, and video testimonials. Unlimited Combinations Most people are some combination of these five basic types. For example, Speed Reader/Information Gatherers skim your content for the important stuff, but if they like what they see, they’ll come back later and scan each page in-depth. Some people are Doers when they’re in a hurry — but when they have enough time on their hands, they’ll go into Listener mode and scour your site for video testimonials and demos.   This is why it’s important to accommodate all types of visitors. By tailoring your content to each type of audience, you’re ensuring that people can interact with your website however they want.Tweet this This is also why redundant content is acceptable — and even desirable — in web writing. People are going to skim, scan, and skip around. By including things like key points and contact info on each page, you’ll ensure that nobody misses the critical information.

World of Things essays

World of Things essays Kamisaka Sekka (18661942) is credited as one of the greatest Japanese artists in the history of Japanese art. He was the ultimate teacher of native style art in Japan. This style is known as Rimpa. Sekka was known for his work in various medias such as lacquer design, painting, textiles, ceramics, furniture and woodblock-printed books. He helped with the development of modern Japanese art. An extraordinary Japanese painting that I would like to describe to you is the Kamisaka Sekka Momoyogusa (World of Things). This painting came from a set of three albums of Kamisaka Sekka. It ranges from the years 1866- 1942. This is a woodblock print made with ink and colors on white paper. This particular painting shows three Japanese women with traditional clothing known as kimonos. Kimonos are made out of silk and are worn for formal or traditional occasions. The three women in this painting appear to be in a dancing ritual lined up. The women appear to be moving on the paper. The women have a flow like appearance. Sekka accomplished this with the location of the women. He did not line them up exactly next to them. The first woman on the left has a lime green hat that covers her entire face. The hat has designs that are made with hatched lines. There also appears to be a small floral design on the hat. The shape of the hat is circular and bent into a taco shape. Her kimono is red with decorations on the sleeves, v-shaped collar and the bottom portion. The designs on her kimono are triangular with the triangles ranging in different colors like brown, gray, white, green and a purple. Her long sleeves also have a floral design that is also red. The women also appears to have brown sandals and a wide black belt around her waist. She is positioned in a dance like mode behind the second women in the painting. The second woman that appears on this painting is also dressed in a traditional kimono. Her short ...

How can computer science help students in school Essay

How can computer science help students in school - Essay Example This sequence must be unambiguous and detailed. It is practiced by engineers, scientists and mathematicians. Through engineering, the building of hardware and software is achieved, while reason and logic are provided through mathematics. It has a strong connection to other specialties like software systems, computer architecture, software engineering, graphics and even artificial intelligence. As such, each of these specialties, having been drawn from Computer Science would mainly focus on particular challenges, and the application and understanding of basically all aspects of Computer Science. Research by the Sheehy shows that only about 21,000 high schools out of about 42,000 public and private high schools in America offered Advanced Placement test in Computer Science in 2011, a 25 per cent drop in the last 5 years. Only 9 states allow Computer Science as a satisfaction to core science or math requirements. Computer Science is considered as a math or science in 41 states. Some of the most influential people in the world like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs all had one thing in common; they all learned Computer Science in high school. ... Thus, computers have become necessary companions to students in various fields to understand the world around them. As Bentley puts it, â€Å"computers are our invisible helpers† (5). Science students use computer-based equipment to make the required observations and to determine the needed facts. For instance, Biologists use it to determine the genetics of given samples. Chemists use it to determine the concentration of chemicals in various samples. Thus, Computer Science provides the capability for students to understand their academic world. Secondly, Computer Science provides the capability of interacting with other students and peers around the world. The Internet gives computers the ability of being tools of communication across the world. Online versions of print publications are always available on the Internet because of the capabilities provided by Computer Science (Straubhaar, LaRose, and Davenport 263). A huge amount of information is stored on the Internet and is always available to the user. An online version of a newspaper will contain a blog section, where readers can contribute their views by leaving their comments, additional links to other sites with related news, multimedia extensions, online forums, and even audio and video files. Academically, they could access information on the advancements in research studies so as to determine the existing knowledge gap. Thus way, students would be able to carry out relevant research studies that would greatly contribute to the existing body of knowledge. Students could use this capability to interact with people from various parts of the world and get to understand what happens in other parts of the world, be it academic or otherwise. Of importance with regards
